"The squashed position can depict the form either flattened out by great pressure or bunched up and pushed together. The stretched position always shows the same form in a very extended condition. The movement from one drawing to the next became the very essence of animation." (The Illusion of Life, Pg 48)
Simply put, two simple gestures, Squashing and Stretching, can change the meaning and feeling of a character and the interaction of the scene. Something as simple as changing the pose of the character can define more expression.
